the beautiful art of hiding

Every now an then I rediscover a photographer. This is the case of Viviane Sassen. The first time I saw her work was in fashion magazines in the late 1990’s, and at the time she was clearly not part of the “point and shoot” generation that thrived in those same magazines. Apparently, she kept on doing fashion photography, but also started some personal projects.

What caught my eye recently was her Flamboya* series, and I have to say these portraits are extremely beautiful. Sassen spent her childhood with her family in Kenya, since her father was a doctor there. After some years in Africa, the family decided to return to The Netherlands. This work is her way to capture some of her childhood memories and sensations.

--

Flamboya (2003 - 2006)

Viviane Sassen's Website

* Flamboya is a type of tree.

No new photographs until the old ones have been used up!

"Joachim Schmid is a thief and a liar. For twenty years Schmid has been taking other peoples' photographs and using them for his own purposes. He has even gone so far as to falsely claim that some of these pictures are lost works by famous photographers.

Over the last two decades Schmid has systematically investigated the possibilities of the found photograph with a rare combination of rigour and humour. Schmid begs us not to take any more pictures; to stop flooding a planet already drowning in photographs with more images. Thankfully he has been ignored, as selections from the unceasing flow of photographs produced globally have formed the basis of Schmid's fascinating projects.

Joachim Schmid may steal photographs and lie about their authors, but his misdemeanours are all in a good cause. He has shown how the supposed masters of photography plunder from the world of snapshots and yet claim their work as unique and original. He has also pointed out time and time again that snapshots themselves, far from being innocent, are elaborately constructed deceits. Over the last twenty years, Schmid has exposed the ways in which photography itself steals and lies." - Stephen Bull

--

photogenic drafts - 1991

favourite photography book : 2006

"The photographs in this book were taken in Hackney Wick and later buried there. The amount of time the images were left undergournd varied depending on the amount of rainfall. The depths that pictures were buried at also varied, as did their positioning. Sometimes they were facing each other, sometimes back to back or sometimes buried singly.

When burying my first batch of photographs, a passing man spotted me and asked what I was doing. Not only did I not want to give the location away of some of my buried pictures, but It just sounded a bit weird to say that I was burying photographs so replied that I was looking for newts. As soon as I'd said that I looked down and saw a newt at my feet.

Not knowing what an image would look like once it was dug up introduced an element of chance and surprise that I found appealing. This feeling of letting go and collaborating with place - allowing it also to work on putting the finishing touches to a picture - felt fair. Maybe the spirit of the place can also make its mark." - Stephen Gill

Buried book + Case + Bury your own print et envelope

Stephen Gill's Website

Title: Buried
Publisher: Nobody, London
Pages: 32
Binding: Hardcover
Publication year: 2006

long lense

"Temporary Discomfort documents Davos, Genoa, New York and Evian/Geneva in a transitory state of emergency lock-down during the global economic summits. It combines different photographical genres: landscape photography, photojournalism and police photography, though here with the camera lens turned back at the security forces. The series and videos aim to achieve a speculative reconstruction of the situations in those cities. The work is speculative not only in terms of these facts but also in regard to the use and expectations of documentary photography. Further, it raises questions about the conditions under which photography is and can be produced today." - Jules Spinatsch

kurpark

porta 221

bodyguard

stone

taped

zone b - sector 21/6

Jules Spinatsch's Website

Cruising the American Dream

"That crazy feeling in America when the sun is hot on the streets and music comes out of the jukebox or from a nearby funeral, that's what Robert Frank has captured in the tremendous photographs taken as he traveled on the road around practically forty-eight states in an old used car (on Guggenhiem Fellowship) and with the agility, mystery, genius, sadness, and strange secrecy of a shadow photographed scenes that have never been seen before on film."

- Jack Kerouac, from his introduction to The Americans.

Title: Les Americains - The Americans
Publisher: Delpire (France) / Grove Press Inc (New York)
Pages: 180
Binding: Hardcover
Publication year: 1958 (France) - 1959 (USA)

Note: revised edition to be published in 2008 by Steidl Verlag

"Les Krims achieved instant recognition in 1969 with five exhibitions of his powerful satirical images, such as his Jewish mother naked on her living room couch, older Jewish men in a Coney Island sauna, and a naked woman wearing only a Minnie Mouse mask posing in front of an oversize cross made out of Mickey Mouse balloons. Over the years his work has been characterized as humorous, disturbing, misogynistic and revolutionary. A pioneer of contemporary tableau and fictional photography, his work has provoked impassioned dialogue about gender, photography's relationship to history, and the borders of promiscuity and taboo."

spitting out the word photography, buffalo, new york, 1970

sally krims, guns in her bra, posing with a cross-eyed woman, buffalo, new york, 1970

diane arbus lives in us # 1, new york, 1971

little person with ironing board (from, "the little people of america", 1971), niagara falls, new york, 1971

mrs. braverman, radical feminist, rochester, new york, 1968

Les Krims website

In tribute to Robert Kennedy, hundreds of thousands of people stood patiently in the searing heat on that June day ( June 8, 1968) to watch his funeral train travel slowly from New York to Washington, D.C.

Paul Fusco photographed the silent, mourning crowds from the passing train.

Title: RFK Funeral Train
Publisher: Umbrage Edition (New York)
Pages: 128 pages
Binding: Paperback
Publication year: 2001

"Photography has maintained a vital presence in African culture for over a century. But the recognition of African photographers and their unique visual language has come about only recently. When western photography engages Africa, it seems often to evoke pathological images of disease, corruption and poverty. The global media almost never depict contemporary Africans in "ordinary" situations; images of crisis frequently eclipse other representations.

In response to this partial view that overlooks the complexities of daily life across a vast continent of over fifty nations, Snap Judgments: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography forces a recognition of the contradictory and varied forms of photographic practice that are now arising across Africa."

Okwui Enwezor

oladélé ajiboyé bamgboyé

nontsikelelo "lolo" veleko

lamia naji

hentje van der merwe

mikhael subotzky

uchechukwu james-iroha

"Snap Judgements: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography"

Publisher : Steidl
Pages: 383
Binding: Hardbound
Publication year: 2006

The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams

"In 1998, Alessandra Sanguinetti began working on a series of photographs which register the saga of two young cousins named Guille and Belinda, then nine and ten years old. Cultivating an intimate relationship with the pair over the past eight years, Sanguinetti collaborates with the girls to construct images fueled by the dreams, fantasies, and fears that accompany the psychological and physical transition from childhood to adulthood."

Paris, 1971). It examines the hope of migration and its influence on the Tangier cityscape. The title refers to the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow channel that divides Europe and Africa, but for Yto Barrada, Strait is another word for the temptation of departure, a commonplace that gives the streets of Tangier the form of an imaginary space into which all the obstinate dreams of leaving the country are engulfed. What she seeks to capture in her photographs are the temptations of leaving, rather than veritable attempts, in a reportage-like style.

shine like a star

Van Leo

"Van-Leo, born Leon Alexander Boyadjian in the village of Jihan Turkey, came to Egypt as a child in 1924. It was here that he would grow up, be schooled and, above all, discover and pursue his love of photography. It was a love that would eventually lead to more than fifty years of outstanding studio photography. Fifty years of portraiture—of the famous and of the not-so-famous, of pashas and generals, of film stars and dancers. Thousands of photographs, but each a unique portrait, due to Van-Leo's unparalleled ability to tailor each session to the personality and character of his subject. It was said that Van-Leo could make everyone look like a star."

Self-Portraits : 1942-1945

selfinkoozament

"robin rhode has invented a word and life philosophy that he believes should be consciously applied at least once a day: selfinkoozament adj. having a proper sense of one's own dignity and integrity; being selfinkoozaful, or selfinkoozaing ('kooza' derives from a venda word meaning support.) in his performance work, he blurs the usually clear-cut boundaries between illusion and reality by attempting to interact three dimensionally with a two-dimensional drawing, playing on the modernist notion of the artist as 'creative genius'. although they inherit all the conventional qualities of drawing (charcoal on white ground) these drawings are made to appear as 'fictitious' as possible, creating an intense awareness that no matter how great the genius, a representation remains just that. All his works thus far are a prequel of things to come - "like star wars" he says."

untitled/rings [2005]

untitled/landing [2005]

untitled/yo yo [2005]

click repeatedly to animate...

yo yo : flash animation

jug : flash animation

anchor : flash animation
